T alk to 10 different people and its likely you’ll get 10 different opinions as to the “mood” and direction of the maritime and offshore oil and gas business in the coming few years. As oil prices — and for that matter, prices for just about everything — hold at historic highs, there is a feeling that the mythical bubble is going to burst, sending the economy into a withdrawal. In historical context, this is true, as markets in general seem to eschew the ability to avoid roller coaster-esque peaks and troughs. Last month I was in Copenhagen with diesel engine maker MAN B&W. The company was holding a social and technical program for its licensees from around the globe, and invited us to participate in a separate program of discus- sions regarding new technological developments (which will be published in the July 2006 edition in concert with our “Diesel Engine Buyer’s Guide”). Walking away with several thick manuals of information, there is one non-technical sta- tistic given that, to me, stands out above the rest. In 2001, the company announced an “unprecedented order intake for our MC brand engines,” quanti- fied by a historically high orderbook. The company, at the time, projected a modest but stable market. Fast forward five years, and the reality is very differ- ent. In the last five years more MC engine power has been sold than in any pre- vious period, and the backlog today is double that of the 2001 record backlog. In collecting material and data for this, our annual yearbook edition, I’ve kept this data in mind tried to avoid bold predictions to any particular niche’s rise or demise. While data and analysis suggests a cooling shipbuilding market and a growing offshore business, keep in mind that in every market there are opportu- nities: the trick is picking the good from the bad.
