The two vessels, which will be constructed for approxi- mately $397.6 million each, are sched- uled for delivery in 2004 and 2005. A final shipbuilding contract will be signed subsequent to Canyon Ranch's completion of financing of the acquisi- tion, as well as the finalization of addi- tional conditions. Circle 73 on Reader Service Card www.maritimereporterinfo.com NORSHIPCO Performs Pod Repair Holland America Cruise Lines con- tacted NORSHIPCO regarding dry- docking, repairs and modifications on the MS Amsterdam in late November 2000. The 61,000-ton Amsterdam, which was built at the Fincantieri ship- yard and measures 780 ft. (237.7 m), can carry 1,380 passengers. When con- tacted by Holland America to discuss the vessel's drydocking, NORSHIPSCO then began to train its personnel to com- plete warranty repairs on the azipod propulsion system in an extremely short availability on the drydock. The vessel's azipod propulsion sys- tem, manufactured by ABB, are self- contained systems capable of rotating 360 degrees, which consists of an elec- tric motor, associated power transmis- sion equipment and a propeller, thus allowing for fine control in ship move- ment required by today's cruise vessels. Since this was the first modification to an azipod system that NORSHIPCO would undertake, planning sessions were held early in 2001 to address resource requirements including facili- ties support, equipment needs and spe- cial tooling. Drydocking was scheduled for Octo- ber 2001, and a crew of skilled mechan- ics from the Mechanical Division (Machine Shop and Rigger Shop) were designated and trained by ABB in Sep- tember. In late September, 2001 howev- er, a conflict developed with the dry- dock due to need emergent repairs. An alternative dock was located in Bay- onne. New Jersey where repairs could be completed. At the insistence of Hol- land America and ABB, arrangements were made to have the trained NOR- SHIPCO personnel still perform the azi- pod modifications at an alternative ship- yard — Bayonne Drydock and Repair located in Bayonne, N.J.
