i\ews FBM Babcock To Build Training Vessels FBM Babcock Marine has been awarded an order for six 86-ft. (26.2-m) aircrew training vessels by SMIT Inter- national (Scotland) Ltd. The order fol- lows the U.K. MOD award of a contract following competition under the Public Private Partnership Program to SMIT International for the provision of air- crew training and firing range safety ser- vices. The FBM Babcock Marine ves- sels will be used by SMIT International to train military aircrew in marine sur- vival techniques and be delivered within 16 months. The vessels will be funded by way of a structured lease with Lom- bard Corporate Finance, a member of the Royal Bank of Scotland Group pic. The vessels are an adaptation of FBM Babcock Marine's 86-ft. (26.2-m) patrol vessel, with accommodation and layout modifications to fulfill SMIT Interna- tional's operational requirements. The J L. • design includes an aft docking well for a RIB or for torpedo recovery, a full width stern training platform and clear deck areas for helicopter winching drills. Additional removable equipment pro- files will be supplied to allow the simu- lation of a variety of typical helicopter winching conditions. The vessels are of aluminum construc- tion, powered by twin engines to pro- pellers and an additional center-line engine to waterjet. The addition of the waterjet allows the vessels to operate economically at slow speed for long periods of time, whilst also providing outstanding maneuverability. Accom- modation is provided for six crewmem- bers. Construction will be split between Babcock BES's Rosyth dockyard and the FBMA Babcock Marine yard in the Philippines, while design and project management is being undertaken from FBM Babcock Marine's Southampton Head Office. On delivery, this alu- minum vessel will go into service with Rogaland Trafikkselskap on a route between Stavanger and Tau on west coast of Norway. The concept is high- lighted by a new Azipull azimuth thruster design with pulling propeller developed by Rolls-Royce. The Norwe- gian ferry is designed to carry 400 pas- sengers and 120 cars, or mix of vehicles with axle loads up to 15 tons. The length is 262 ft. (80m); the beam 65 ft. (20m). A slender catamaran layout with sym- metrical hulls has been chosen, and these hulls have hydrodynamically inte- grated propulors, the new Ulstein Aqua- master Azipull units developed by Rolls-Royce, with one unit placed at each end of each hull. Locating one azimuth thruster at each of the four corners of the vessel gives excellent maneuverability, helped by the Rolls-Royce joystick system which enables the captain to control all propul- sors with a single movement.
