Marine supports the homogenizer through a unique program of compre- hensive fuel management designed for optimizing the treatment of problem fuels. An independent testing laboratory in Taiwan has documented the perfor- mance of the Fuel Mill dynamic homog- enizer. The research showed significant improvement in the homogeneity and viscosity of heavy fuel oil following homogenization. Circle 60 on Reader Service Card Austal Breaks 24-Hour Record Reaching speeds of 47.7 knots, the Austal-built "Villum Clausen" has writ- ten its name into the record books, breaking the record for the longest dis- tance traveled by a ship in 24 hours. En- route to Denmark, the 282 ft. (86 m) gas turbine powered vehicle-passenger cata- maran covered a distance of 1,063 n m in a 24 hour period — adding another 45 n m to the previous record. The record breaking journey took place on the pas- sage between Sumatra and Cochin, India, during the fast ferry's delivery voyage from Austal's Western Aus- tralian shipyard to the Danish island of Bornholm for BomholmsTrafikken. The average speed on the run was 44.2 knots. "After 23 hours Villum Clausen covered the distance of 1,018.2 n.m., which is the distance of the previous record, held by the Danish fast ferry Cat-Link V, which won the Blue Riband of the Atlantic on July 20, 1998," said ship's Captain Claus Kristensen. The propulsion plant of the aluminum catamaran comprises 2 x GE LM2500 gas turbines generating 18,000 kW each, 2 x Renk gearboxes and 4 x Kamewa waterjets. Circle 56 on Reader Service Card Dynalco Engine Analyzers Type-Approved Dynalco Controls, a Crane Co. com- pany, announced that its Diesel-Trap 9240, 9220 and 9220/P portable diesel engine performance and vibration ana- lyzers, in conjunction with Dynalco's RTwin analysis software, have received type approval from the American Bureau of Shipping. The Diesel-Trap analyzer determines diesel engine per- formance and mechanical condition. Depending on the model, these analyz- ers collect phase marked cylinder pres- sures, vibration and ultrasonic data. The 9240 model comes with Dynalco's Beta- Link, a built-in digital wireless transmit- ter/receiver unit for flywheel reference. RTwin software manages the engine data and structures it in displays and reports for extensive statistical analyses. Circle 59 on Reader Service Card PropExpert V. 4.2 Released HydroComp, Inc. released PropExpert version 4.2. — a software tool from HydroComp, Inc. for propeller sizing and selection. The response that a user gets after clicking the Build button on the Sizing page has been changed. Prop- Expert now searches harder to find a solution before returning with its warn- ing and error messages. There will no longer be multiple messages (e.g., the best diameter is larger than the maxi- mum) during the calculation. One gen- eral message at the conclusion of the Build will be shown only if the sizing encountered serious cavitation, an opti- mum diameter is larger than the maxi- mum, or if a maximum speed could not be found. HydroComp is always improving PropExpert's speed predic- tion algorithms as new data is made available. This version includes an improved prediction for all vessels.
