Safety at Sea • Products NoFire Technologies Helps Ships Meet SOLAS In December 1996 the IMO adopted amendments to the SOLAS Convention that affect fire safety measures aboard ships. The amendments encompass a new International Code for the Applica- tion of Fire Test Procedures, which has been made mandatory on or after July 1. 1998. These significant changes affect Chap- ter II-2 of the SOLAS Code, Construc- tion-Fire protection, fire detection and fire extinction. Regulation 34 requires nearly all exposed and concealed sur- faces to have low flame-spread charac- teristics, as well as all paints not being capable of producing an excessive amount of smoke and toxic products. In response to these new amendments and guidelines. Draeger Launches PointGard II Draeger Safety's new PointGard II is a microprocessor-based, stand-alone gas detector that continuously monitors toxic gases and oxygen in ambient air. Both Compact and economical, the instrument detects toxic levels of gases, as well as excess or deficient levels of oxygen in any non- classified area. Bright LEDs dis- play the target gas concentration, while an adjustable vol- I ume horn and two strobes provide alarm annunciation at the point of haz- ard.
