de Nul Group, the dredger, which is the largest in the world, will be utilized for international land reclamation projects. Krupp Fordertechnik GmbH supplied the dredging systems and components. Before being passed over to its owner during 2000, the dredger is scheduled to carry out high-performance dredging operations. Main Particulars Length 656 ft. (200 m) Width 119 ft. (36.2 m) Draft 46 ft. (14 m) Dredging depth 148/197/262/430 ft. (45/60/80/131 m) Deadweight 58,000 tons Total power (approximate) 37,060 kW Speed (fully laden) 16.5 knots Pilot Boat Features New Hull Design Featuring a waterjet-powered fiber- glass hull, a new pilot boat was con- structed for Puget Sound Pilots at Nord- lund Boat Co., Tacoma, Wash. Measuring 74 ft. (22.5 m), the vessel will be based at Port Angeles, Wash., where it was scheduled to enter service during December 1999. Powered by two Cat® 3412E marine diesel engines, each rated 900-bhp at 2,300-rpm, driving Hamilton waterjets through Reintjes Gears, the vessel's top speed is estimat- ed at 26 knots. The 1,800-bhp (1,342 bkW) Puget Sound boasts a new hull design developed in conjunction with Tim Nolan of Tim Nolan Marine Design and Ed Hagemann of Hage- Marine, Inc. Noted as the first marine engine to fea- ture Caterpillar's patented Hydraulical- ly-Actuated Electronically-Controlled Unit Injector (HEUI) fuel system — this will be the first pilot boat installation of Cat 3412Es. Regarding the engine's per- formance, Captain John Harris, of Puget Sound Pilots, cited increased fuel econ- omy, emissions control and weight-to- weight power ratio. Launched last month for operation in the Gulf of Mexico, the vessel measures 260 x 56 ft. with its large capacity pro- viding reliability in unfavorable weather conditions — allowing it to remain at sea for extended periods. A fully enclosed North Sea-style deck houses all pumping, mixing and blending equipment — eliminating exposure of equipment and personnel to weather. Equipped with the most recent tech- nology in antiroll systems, environmen- tal waste containment, data acquisition and transmission, and fluid engineering, the vessel runs at 12,700-hhp at rates of 50 barrels per minute. DeepSTIM can also increase its hhp, with 48 hours notice, to 19,500-hhp. A process con- trolled, continuous-mix fluid system permits "on-the-fly" mixing of both acid and fracturing fluids utilizing fresh water or seawater, thus significantly minimizing fluid wastes and reducing material costs. Features include an inno- vative dynamic positioning system, which allows the vessel to remain at a programmed position using computer- supported thrusters constructed into the vessel's hull. A high-speed satellite communications package allows trans- mission of critical wellsite information. This software driven array allows for each sensor to remotely configure itself for the type of product as well as the structural characteristics within each tank. It is completely self-diagnostic and is factory calibrated using a laser interferometer to ,1mm. It is designed for the harshest environments and can be provided in a high temperature version to 385°F. It is intrinsically safe with Class 1, Div. 1, Group D & C approvals. As a smart sensor, all processing calculations and software are resident in the device itself, only a high level generic data output, i.e., RS485 (or others on request) is sent to the cargo control area.
