The pump and valve control system pro- vides automated control of 112 valves, and remote start/stop of 14 cargo pumps that handle liquid cargo (such as potable water, liquid mud, drill water, mineral oil or brine). The alarm and monitoring system monitors the condition of the main engine, gearbox, shaft lines, thrusters, generators and bilges, generat- ing an alarm when certain set points or thresholds are reached. Finally, the tank sounding system automatically mea- sures the quantity of fluid in approxi- mately 50 cargo tanks. According to Robert Field, Trihedral Control Sys- tems Engineer on the project, "The pace and complexity of this project were a particular challenge. The system design was changing continually, but the flexi- bility of the software allowed us to accommodate the changes as we pro- gressed through the rebuild, commis- sioning, and sea trial stages." With an overall length of 269.7 (82.2 m), breadth of 52.1 ft. (15.9 m) and draft of (20.3) 6.2 m, the MV Trinity Sea is currently working and the MV Burin Sea has completed sea trials, undergoing rigorous testing to meet Secunda's stan- dards. According to company sources, Secunda exceeded the expectations of their large oil company client by provid- ing a fully automated system. Circle 32 on Reader Service Card Transas Launches Stand-Alone Engineroom Simulator The new stand-alone simulator ERS Solo was launched by Transas in late November. This simulator broadens the company's existing product range of Engine Room simulators, which includes the PC-based ERS 2000 and the ERS 3000, which is fitted with real engine room controls. The ERS Solo possesses all the func- tionality of its networked predecessors, other than their on-line Instructor func- tions. With the ERS Solo simulator, the Instructor-generated tasks are per- formed in off-line mode. The main sim- ulated machinery includes the ship's diesel propulsion power plant, with models for 2-stroke and 4-stroke diesel engines, an electric power plant and a number of auxiliary systems. The main purpose of this new simula- tor development from Transas is to pro- vide a cost-effective but efficient instru- January, 2000 ment suitable for both preliminary and knowledge refreshment training of Engine Room watch-keeping personnel. Circle 47 on Reader Service Card VTC Expands Possibilities With Cutler-Hammer Agreement Vosper Thornycroft Controls (VTC) has expanded its expertise in electrical power and propulsion systems by enter- ing into a Systems Builder Agreement with Cutler-Hammer (C-H). Previously, VTC has just operated at the lower end of the market in switchboard and elec- trical systems, concentrating on ships with a requirement for up to 1,000 volts. The new link with C-H will enable VTC to supply the market where systems operate at up to 17.5 kV. The agreement allows for VTC to make use of C-H products, with VTC applying its naval and marine knowledge to the packaging of the products, as well as the design and building. The first contract taking advantage of the new agreement is already in hand, as VTC will design and build a 6.6 kV switchboard for the new trimaran warship demonstrator.
