Contracts Totem Enters Into Agreement With NASSCO With deliveries scheduled for late 2002, Totem Ocean Trailer Express (TOTE) of Anchorage, Alaska, has come to an agreement with National Steel and Shipbuilding Company (NASSCO) for the construction of two 839 ft. (255.7 m) RoRo vessels for its Alaska service. According to Robert P. Magee, TOTE's president and CEO, "This $300 million private investment will further our commitment to Alaskans well into the next century by enhancing Alaskan job opportunities on our vessels and Circle 266 on Reader Service Card shoreside." "These ships, which carry more than 50 percent more cargo than our present ships, are designed specifically to endure the harsh conditions of the Alas- ka trade," Magee added. The new vessels will be the same size as TOTE's existing three ships, "while maintaining extra capacity to fulfill any surge cargo needs and allow for seam- less service during dry docks," Magee furthered. Designed for the transport of trucks, trailers, trailer-borne products and equipment, and cars, the vessel is divided horizontally into decks and ver- tically into holds, interconnected by internal fixed ramps. CSO will provide the major equipment for the new vessel allowing it to lay rigid and flexible pipes, and umbilicals to 8,202 ft. (2,500 m) water depth in 2001. U.S. Navy Awards Contract To Bath Iron Works The U.S. Navy has granted the DD-21 Shipbuilder Alliance a $238 million contract for the application of Phase II of the design and development of the next-generation destroyer. Led by Gen- eral Dynamics Bath Iron Works, the Blue Team will receive $98.4 million in phase II — a similar amount will go to the Gold Team led by Litton Ingalls Shipbuilding. BIW and Ingalls were designated by the government in May 1998 as the DD- 21 Shipbuilder Alliance, which oversees contractual management for the two teams who are developing competitive proposals.
