Caledonian MacBrayne ferries has YVC Takes Over Shiprepair Activities At WF At Schiedam Upon the realization that Wilton Fijenoord Shiprepairyard (WF) was available for acquisition by interested parties, Yssel-Vliet Combination (YVC) decided to take advantage of the oppor- tunity by taking over all of the yard's facilities and shiprepair activities. The new YVC company, Rotterdam United Shipyards B.V., commenced its activi- ties in April; the shipyard is comprised of five drydocks, along with modernized well-equipped workshops. Saipem Ready For New Offshore Operations Before the new year commenced, Hydrex, headquartered in Antwerp, was contacted by the owners of Saipem 7000 to begin maintenance and repair work. The large semi-sub- mersible crane ves- sel, constructed in 1987 by Fincantieri, has an approximate overall length of 656 ft. (200 m), a beam of 295 ft. (90 m) and an operation draft of more than 131 ft. (40 m). Saipem 7000 is constructed with eight engines, four propellers and 10 thrusters. NASSCO was awarded the $490 million contract, December 1997, by the U.S. Navy, who wanted to improve "quality of life" for the sailors serving on these ships. USS ESSEX returned to operations in late June and will return for additional work to be completed on September 3 of this year. (CSE) to convert a single-hulled tanker to dou- ble-hulled construction at its Port Weller Dry Docks facility. This project will mark the first conversion, of this type, ever done at a Canadian shipyard. Algo- ma owns and operates North America's largest fleet on the Great lakes-St. Lawrence Waterway.
