EXXON Exxon states that in 1998 it operated in a difficult busi- ness environment. However, careful management of its asset portfolio and a vigorous drive to control costs per- mitted Exxon to achieve its fourth-highest net income in history: $64 billion-resulting in a return on capital employed of 12 per- cent. According to Exxon, shareholder return, including reinvested dividends, reached 22 percent, well above the average of the other international oil companies. The company has also increased their capital spending from $8.8 billion in 1997, to $10 billion in 1998 in order to take advantage of attractive investment opportunities. Exxon has one of the largest portfolios of proved reserves and production in the United States, and is Malaysia's largest oil producer and the largest supplier of natural gas to Peninsular Malaysia. The company has exploration or production operations on every continent except Antarctica.
