OFFSHORE & MARINE PUMP AND PUMPING EXPERTISE SINCE 1860 in mind, and good overall perfor- mance. In 1995 several configura- tions were put through tests for speed, seaworthiness and wake at the tank-testing facilities of MARIN (Maritime Research Institute Netherlands) in Holland to determine the best overall solu- tion. Scale models at one tenth of the true size were tested in the tanks throughout 1996 - both dri- ven in calm waters and self-pro- pelled in wave tanks. The process was finalized with sea trials in February 1998. The catamaran, both hulls and modules, is con- structed primarily of GRP Sandwich, a material that lends itself well to keeping the vessel weight at a minimum. The trans- verse beams are made of alu- minum, and are joined to the hulls on heavily reinforced double watertight bulkheads. IRIS 6.1 has been acquired by TMCA of Guadaloupe to be used as an inter- island shuttle service between Point-a-Pitre, Marie Galante, and Les Saintes. This alternative to the usual transport by plane allows passengers to spend less than 40 minutes travelling from Pointe-a-Pitre.
