MTU Nabs Navy, USCG Contracts The U.S. Navy has ordered more than 60 12V 396 engines from MTU Friedrichshafen to be used in its Mark V special patrol boats. Two engines, each with a total power of 3,360-kW drive the Kamewa wateijets, accelerating the 82-ft. (25-m) to speeds of more than 50 knots. The series-built vessels have been under con- struction since 1995 by Halter Marine. MTU has also won other prestigious orders in the form of patrol boats of the Marine Protector Class for the U.S. Coast Guard. The first of seven craft with MTU engines was commissioned in New Orleans in March. Each patrol boat will be powered by two MTU 8V 396 engines of 1,475 hp each. The vessels, built by Bollinger Shipyards, can reach a speed of 25 knots and carry a crew of 10.
