Flender Werft Launches Santa Federica Flender Werft recently celebrated the launching of containership Santa Federica. The ship, owned by Claus-Peter Offen, is of the FW 2100 type series, and features a DWT of 30,200 with a service speed of 20 knots. Santa Federica is equipped with four cranes carrying 2,169 contain- ers in six tiers. Propulsion is accomplished with a crosshead MAN B&W 6S 60 MC engine devel- oping 12,240 kW at 105 rpm. Electrical energy is supplied from four auxiliary diesel generators with a total output of 3,670 kW. The new containership is sched- uled to be delivered in July, at which time it will enter service under a three-year charter for P&O Nedlloyd Lines. Circle 44 on Reader Service Card Daewoo Gets Order For Car Carriers Ugland International Holding Pic and Leif Hoegh & Co. have ordered two new car vehicle carri- ers from Daewoo Heavy Industries Ltd. for around $56.9 million each. Ugland and Leif Hoegh — whose jointly owned company, Norwegian car transport specialist HUAL AS, already owns five vessels — placed the order through another joint company Joint Vessels Ltd. NNS Awarded $1.2 Billion USS Nimitz Contract Newport News Shipbuilding (NNS) has been awarded a con- tract by the U.S. Navy to perform refueling and overhaul work on the nuclear-powered aircraft carrier USS Nimitz (CVN 68). The con- tract, valued at approximately $1.2 billion, was signed by Navy and NNS officials on April 30, 1998. In addition to the refueling of both of the ship's reactors, there will be significant modernization work including a major upgrade of the island house and the integra- tion of a new radar tower. Maintenance and repair work will be performed below the ship's waterline to include the applica- tion of new paint.
