The latest to enter the fray is U.K.-based clas- sification society Lloyd's Register (LR), which recently unveiled its new computer software, designed to save time and costs in the design and maintenance of ships. Dubbed ShipRight IS, the new software integrates design process- es to reduce the time taken between initial planning for a ship and ordering the steel for its con- struction. The system is designed for use over a vessel's lifetime, to monitor wear and tear and give an electronic record of damage and repairs. ShipRight IS will report- edly be introduced to LR offices worldwide next month and made available to shipyards and design- ers at a later date. According to LR officials, the sys- tem will be retroactively applicable to existing ships, providing the availability of sufficient details to create an electronic model of the March, 1998 original design.
