THE AUTOMATED BRIDGE Furuno Releases New ARPA Radars Furuno recently unveiled its lat- est line of commercial grade ARPA radars — the FAR2805 series. These units meet IMO require- ments for installation aboard all classes of conventional vessels. There are seven models avail- able, ranging from 10 to 60 kW, including both X-band and S-band configurations. The units incorporate a logarith- mic amp, multi-level quantization, echo stretch, echo averaging and built-in radar interference rejector to provide quality target location. Each unit provides a 360 mm diameter picture with extra space for alphanumeric data. A total of 40 targets can be entered into the Furuno ARPA radars. Each radar can be equipped with either a 36 or 44 rpm motor for high-speed vessels. In 1997, SAIT-Radio Holland introduced its new Shore Based Maintenance Coordination Contract (SBMCC), proving that shoreside support is just as crucial to maintaining advanced electron- ic systems as onboard personnel. With the SBMCC, a shipowner can reportedly utilize Radio Holland's worldwide organization to take care of all marine electronic prob- lems. The SBMCC complies with all international regulations encom- passing GMDSS, IMO and SOLAS. It is coordinated from four area coordination centers, covering all seven seas. GLONASS represents the latest technology in satellite navigation. The new system — the Russian equivalent of GPS — adds another 24 satellites for precision position- ing using the MAN Technologies NR-N124 GPS/GLONASS Navigation System. To take advantage of the increased satellite availability, as well as the improved integrity of two independently operated satel- lite positioning systems, the NR- N124 features 12 channels for LI GPS and 12 channels for LI GLONASS, providing all-in-view tracking for both constellations. By using GPS and GLONASS with real-time RTCM differential correction techniques, the cus- tomer is set up to receive signifi- cantly better accuracy — to within 90 cm and .10 of a knot. Standard features of the NR- N124 include: automatic beacon scan and selective algorithms, which lock on the strongest trans- mitting beacon station in seconds; and digital matched filters, which allow for adjacent channel rejec- tion. A multi-track Beacon receiv- er, the latest in radio transmission technology, is available with the system as an option.
