Blotk Island Builder Eastern Shipbuildng Group Vessel name Blotk Island Vessel type Passenger/vehicle ferry Owner/operator Interstate Navigation, Inc. Eastern Shipbuilding Group completed passenger/vehicle ferry Block Island last summer. The new 208 x 39-ft. (63.4 x 11.9- m), $7.5 million vessel operates on a year- round run from Pt. Judith to Block Island, R.I., carrying approximately 45 vehicles and up to 1,000 passengers. Block Island is the first new ship for Interstate Navigation Company since 187 ft. (56.9 m) Carol Jean was commissioned in 1984, also built at Eastern. Block Island is powered by twin 2,000 hp Model 8-710 EMD diesel engines and Reintjes Model WGV 481 marine gears with 2.509:1 reduction rations. During sea trials off Panama City, Fla., the vessel performed at speeds in excess of 18.2 knots. Bird Johnson furnished the 80 x 78.5-in., four-blade stainless steel pro- pellers. Engines were furnished by Engine Systems, Inc. and gearboxes were furnished by Karl Senner, Inc. A main lever steering system was furnished by Control General, with an auxiliary wheel system provided by Jastram.
