The new, larger multi- purpose tugs will be used in ship assist and escort roles for larger, spe- cialized vessels and ocean towing. The Z-class tugs are reportedly capable of ship handling duties, sal- vage, firefighting, oil recovery, ice- breaking, escort and coastal towing of vessels and barges. Design features have been incorpo- rated to meet U.S. Navy specifica- tions for naval ship and submarine duties.
