The vessel was previously christened in October by I\oula Chandris, spouse of Michael Chancb-is, a member of Celebrity Cruises' board of Directors. Galaxy is 865.8\ft. (263.9 m) in length, and is a sisterskip to Century, which debuted in 1995 an\l was honored as one of MR I EN'S Outstanding Cruise Ships of 1995. Galaxy will Reportedly will be the largest ship ever to transit the Panama Canal and the largesttcruise vessel operat- ing in Alaska during 1*97. After delivery in Germany, the ship trav- eled to Southampton, England, and was also introduced in Amsterdam and Hamburg before heading to the U.S. East Coast for a two-week serxtes of inaugural events.
