Westinghouse To Provide Diesel Engines For USCG Icebreaker Westinghouse Electric Corp.'s Marine Division has begun work on a $14.5 million contract from Avondale Industries to provide die- sel engines for the U.S. Coast Guard's (USCG) newest polar ice- breaker, the USCG Michael A. Healy. Under the purchase order from Avondale, Westinghouse will pro- vide four 12-cylinder, 10,600-hp ZA40S medium-speed engines. The company is working closely with Fincantieri's diesel engine divi- sion in Trieste, Italy, which will physically build the engines. The engines will be delivered in January 1996. The current contract includes four sub-bases that will serve as mounts for the medium-speed die- sels. Generators for the icebreaker's electric drive propulsion system are being designed and manufactured by the Westinghouse Motor Com- pany in Round Rock, Texas, under a separate contract. The diesel-gen- erator units will power two 15,000- hp electric motors. These motors will drive two fixed- pitch propellers. In addition to pro- viding power for the electric-drive system, the Westinghouse medium- speed diesels will also supply en- ergy for the ship's electrical service. For more information on Westinghouse, Circle 17 on Reader Service Card USCG Schedules Hearings On Proposed Small Passenger Vessel Regs The U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) has scheduled public hearings on a proposed rulemaking to completely update the existing construction and equipment standards for small pas- senger vessels.The standards would apply to more than 52,000 vessels including ferries, sight-seeing, ex- cursion and dinner cruise boats, charter and party fishing boats, dive boats and offshore oil industry crew boats. The proposed changes would simplify the small passenger vessel requirements and update them. The proposal would cover certain lifesaving equipment; promote in- creased use of fire retardant materi- als; and establish new upper thresh- olds for vessel length and passenger capacity above which certain con- struction and equipment require- ments would apply.
