Under an agreement with New Sulzer Diesel Ltd., Westinghouse intends to manufacture low- and medium-speed diesel engines for the U.S. Navy's Strategic Sealift pro- gram and commercial markets. These engines are well-suited for Ro/Ros, ferries, passenger cruise ships, and cargo vessels of all types. Three-quarters of the world's ship- ping fleet is powered by low-speed diesels and Westinghouse is the only U.S. manufacturer of these engines. As an experienced systems inte- grator, Westinghouse has brought together leading marine propulsion component designers to become a high-quality U.S. source for marine diesel engines, components and com- plete propulsion systems for Sealift and commercial applications. Westinghouse supplies a complete design and manufacturing package, including Westinghouse reduction gears, Westinghouse-built Escher Wyss controllable pitch propellers, which are Navy-qualified to 50,000 hp, and line shafting from Jorgensen Forge.
