New Kvaerner RoRo Access Equipment To Be Part Of Robin Hood Conversion Profile drawing of the Robin Hood as she will appear after her $62 million conversion to the Nils Holgersson. A major feature of the 250 million Finnish Mark ($62 million) conver- sion contract awarded by Germany's TT Line to Finland's Kvaerner Masa- Yards for work on the 24,728-gt train ferry Robin Hood is a new ship-set of RoRo access equipment designed by Kvaerner Ships Equipment AB, of Gothenburg, Sweden. Originally built in the late 1980s to operate as a train ferry between Germany and Sweden, the Robin Hood was fitted with only a stern ramp/door, over which rail cars were loaded and discharged. However, to meet the vessel's new requirements as a luxury passenger ferry carrying passenger cars and freight vehicles, Kvaerner Ships Equipment AB has designed a new bow loading system. The vessel's bow will be totally rebuilt to accommodate bow loading and discharge operations. Kvaerner Ships Equipment's contract calls for the design of a new bow visor, which will be a one-section unit integral with the vessel's bow structure, bow ramp/door, hoistable car deck and two passenger access doors. Operation of the new bow door/ ramp will be via direct acting hy- draulic cylinders and two support- ing stays connected by hinges to the outer ramp section and recesses in the Combi Deck. The new bow door/ramp is de- signed to accept a loaded road trailer with an axle load of two by 15 tons and a three by 15 tons, as well as a 40-foot loaded MAFI with an axle load of 32.5 tons. Increased vehicle capacity aboard the vessel will be provided by a new 8,719-sq.-ft. hoistable car deck. This new deck will be situated between the Combi Deck and the Trailer Deck, port and starboard of the ma- chinery casing. This is a major contract for Kvaerner Ships Equipment AB, as the time scale from initial design conception to commissioning of equipment is extremely short, thereby necessitating a fast response from the Swedish RoRo access equip- ment specialist. Both Kvaerner Masa Yards and Kvaerner Ships Equipment AB hold an option on the conversion of a sistership, the Nils Dacke. When redelivered to TT Lines, Robin Hood will be renamed Nils Holgersson and will return to her route between Sweden and Ger- many. The NSRP started in 1970 as a result of amendments to the 1936 Merchant Marine Act. More specifi- cally, the Secretary of Commerce was charged to "collaborate with...shipbuilders in developing plans for the economic construction of vessels." The Ship Production Committee of the Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers (SNAME) has been chosen by the Maritime Administration to provide the strategic direction to the NSRP. The NSRP is a unique cost-shared government and industry program with research ideas generated by both sectors. The ideas then go through a refinement process and are worked into a project proposal. The proposal is then evaluated and a determination is made as to whether it is vital enough to the shipbuilding and repair industry to be funded. Once a proposal is funded, a competitive proposal process se- lects the best researcher for the job.
