Westamarin's Foilcat 2900, driven by two MTU 16V engines, is capable of 50-knot speeds. WESTMARIN: Breaking New Ground With Foilcat 2900 The name Westamarin is familiar to those involved in shipping, as well as amongst thousands of passengers in Norway and several other coun- tries. For more than 30 years the com- pany has delivered fast passenger craft, most of which have been cata- marans carrying the trademark Westamarin, a name which in Nor- way has become synonymous with this type of craft. Westamarin West A/S in Mandal is a leading yard in the production of fast passenger catamarans. Since 1986 the yard has been a company within the Swede Ship Group and is 100 percent owned by Swede Ship Invest AB. In 1971, as the first yard world- wide, Westamarin A/S introduced the high speed passenger catamaran. The development and construction of the W-86, M/S Fjordglytt represented in 1971 the first vessel of this type ever produced. The development of the vessel was made possible by making use of the yard's 10 years experience in produc- ing different types of high-speed ves- sels. Westamarin A/S has constructed and delivered more than 60 vessels, the majority of which have been pas- senger catamarans. However, the yard also has experi- ence building SES catamarans and single-hull vessels for military and civil uses. Nearly 20 years after the introduc- tion of the passenger catamaran, Westamarin made yet another world premier with its Foilcat 2900, which was developed, designed and built by Westamarin West A/S inMandal, and was the first high speed craft of the Foil Cat type to be delivered. The 96-foot Foilcat 2900 passenger catamaran, which has a 27-foot breadth and a six-foot draft, is outfit- ted with 100 percent submerged foil profiles. In operation, the foils will lift the catamaran hull out of the water and an advanced computer controlled "Flight Control System" (FCS), in combination with movable flaps on the foils, keep the Foilcat 2900 stable. Low sea resistance on the hulls and foil system result in a service speed of 45 knots (Maximum speed is approxi- mately 50 knots), significantly reduc- ing travelling time when compared to conventional catamarans. Classed Det norske Veritas * 1A1R 90 Light Craft Passenger Catamaran, EO, the Foilcat 2900's hull is con- structed of seawater resistant alumi- num, and its foils are stainless steel. The vessel, has a capacity for 160 passengers, is powered by a pair of MTU 16V 396 TE 74L engines (2,000 kW at 2,000 rpm), which drive Ulstein propellers. The Foilcat2900 also features Stam- ford generators, and a ventilation sys- tems delivered by A/S Norsk Viftefabrikk. Porter and the P. H. Worley to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Huntington, W.Va., dis- trict. The Porter is working on the Ohio River at Gallipolis, Ohio, and the Winfield is working on the Kanawha River in West Virginia district. Each of the all-steel towboats has an 18-foot beam and a 7.5-foot depth. They are powered by two Cummins NTA 855 diesel engines developing 400 hp each, driving through Twin Disc reverse/reduction gears. Electrical power on the vessels is provided by a Northern Light M964 generator. Each boat can carry 600 gallons of fuel and 150 gallons of fresh water.
