According to company offi- cials, the 368-passenger, all-alumi- num catamaran is making the 26- nautical mile run in a fast-running time of about 52 minutes. She joined a fleet of five monohulls operated by Catalina Channel Ex- press that run daily from Long Beach, Redondo Beach and San Pedro to the island resort. The largest cat built to date by Gladding-Hearn, the triple-deck 102- by 28-1/2- by 3-1/2-foot vessel is powered by a pair of Detroit Diesel 16V149TAs rated at 1,740 hp, each turning at 1,800 rpm, and driven by twin KaMeWa waterjets. By using waterjets instead of conventional propellers, draft was kept to only three feet, and a minimal wake is produced at all speeds. Hydrauli- cally actuated, adjustable trim tabs, designed by the yard, further re- duce the wake by adjusting for load at lower speeds. MAUI-E-TICKET San Diego Shipbuilding Circle 69 on Reader Service Card San Diego Shipbuilding & Re- pair, Inc., Chula Vista, Calif., deliv- January, 1992 ered the unique sightseeing vessel the Maui-E-Ticket for operation by owner Corporate E-Ticket, Inc., in the coastal waters off the Island of Maui in the Hawaiian Islands. Conceived by Curtis Jackson Jr., the 56-foot-longby 25-foot-wide Maui-E-Ticket is a catamaran type vessel, carrying 22 passengers in each hull. Each passenger is seated before large polycarbonate viewing windows for the observation of sea life. In addition, each passenger wears a personal headset to monitor a running account of the sights pass- ing outside the viewing compart- ments. In actuality, the Maui-E-Ticket is a semisubmersible displacing 115 tons that can be ballasted low in the water for stability and better view- ing from the passenger compart- ments. She is powered by three Cum- mins 4BT3s coupled through Borg Warner 72C direct drives to Stern Power 113E outdrives. The engines are controlled by Mathers Micro Commander electronic controls from port and starboard steering posi- tions. In addition to six passenger view- ing compartments in the hulls, pas- sengers can purchase refreshments in the midships lounge and bar. The evening underwater view is en- hanced by high intensity lights. To enable the pilot to show his passen- gers particularly interesting scenes, from the pilothouse he monitors for- ward port- and starboard-looking color video cameras. Increased ship's safety through reliable, precise navigation • economical operation through reduced personnel requirements • relief of the officer on duty from routine tasks .. .are the outstanding features of the NAUT0PL0T. Besides indicating the actual position on a sea chart, the NAUT0PL0T offers, in systemtechnical combination with the adaptive autopilot NAUT0PIL0T A, the track controller NAUTOTRACK and optionally a Nautical Information Display, the function of a track control system. Modern sea-going ships, such as the "Ship of the Future" utilize this technological advance. J ZJ • » e is MgflSfNG •»>•«»» ® j — j ANSCHUETZ OF AMERICA Division of Carl Zeiss, Inc.
