Boats & Barges New Blount Cruise Ship Features Passenger Comfort Artisfs conception of the new cruise ship to be built by Blount Marine. Most cabins will have picture windows, hanging lockers, vanities, and can be converted from two singles to double beds upon request. Luther H. Blount, president of Blount Marine Corporation, recently announced construction of a fifth cruise ship to be built at the Blount Marine Shipyard in Warren, R.I. The new vessel, Hull #280, is 172 feet in length and will carry 90 pas- sengers on overnight cruises. It will be built for routes that extend from the upper St. Lawrence River in northeast Canada to the Caribbean rim and Central America. TheUSCG has approved conceptual plans, many of which follow "H" Rules and include many new features. New acoustic technology will en- sure quiet operation of the cruise ship. Night power will be supplied from a super quiet hospital-type generating unit located on the ex- treme stern deck. A new style of ductless air condi- tioning system will allow occupants of each cabin to control the tempera- ture on an individual basis. This system, too, eliminates the usual air conditioning hums and noises, and all air shuts down automatically on fire or smoke detection. Hull #280 will be equipped with Blount's newest invention, the si- lent Pint-A-Flush commode, which uses only one pint of water per flush and cannot be heard during flush- ing. The pilothouse will be retract- able so the ship can glide under 22- foot-high bridges during popular canal cruises. The vessel will draw only 6 feet 6 inches of water, allow- ing sailing into the exotic and out- of-the-way areas of the Caribbean. The special bow ramp will extend as far as 40 feet, insuring a dry landing onto remote beaches. The interior will reflect many dif- ferent Mayan designs indigenous to the areas the vessel may navigate. The entire interior will be built of fireproof materials. The cruise ship is scheduled for completion in early 1992.
