Lasers For Ship Defense Examined By U.S. Navy The U.S. Navy is examining las- ers for detection, identification and destruction of targets in light of more stealthy and speedy threats, according to Aaron Budgor, former Navy program manager for the SDI Firepond laser radar pro- gram, who is doing long-range plan- ning for the Naval Research Labo- ratory. Navy researchers contend lasers could have a lower cost per engage- ment than tactical missiles. Mr. Budgor said the cost of tactical defensive missiles have risen from $50,000 to $250,000 a shot. The cost of a chemical laser has been esti- mated at $5,000 to $10,000 per en- gagement, after factoring in hard- ware and crew training, he said. Mr. Budgor noted that propos- als for all-electric ships are calling for 50- to 100-megawatt power sup- plies. "With that kind of power it is not hard to envision using a free- electron laser" for shipboard de- fense. The award was made by the Naval Sea Systems Command, Washington, D.C., for the construction of 41 RIBs. The contract also contains options for up to 65.-additional boats for FY92. Williard Marine built 34 of these boats for NAVSEA in 1990 under a previous contract. The RIB is de- signed for service as a standard ship's boat for general purpose use. Williard Marine produces RIBs for commercial and military markets in 18-, 22- and 24-foot sizes at its manufacturing plant in Ana- heim, Calif. The RIBs are available with various diesel inboard and out- board power options.
