MSI Combines Emergency Medical Training Program With Shiphandling Course Marine Safety International (MSI) recently announced that an emergency medical training pro- gram is being combined with the shiphandling course offered to per- sonnel undergoing training at the Computer Aided Operations Re- search Facility (CAORF), operated by MSI at the U.S. Merchant Ma- rine Academy, Kings Point, N.Y. According to MSI, "Emergency First Care at Sea," conducted by Emergency and Safety Programs, Inc. (ESP), is a dynamic and inno- vative U.S. Coast Guard-approved program specifically designed for maritime personnel. Emphasis is on a basic approach to caring for all serious medical emergencies that could occur on board vessels, and what to do to provide life support until professional medical assist- ance becomes available, regardless of the diagnosis or cause of the problem. The program aims to remove the confusion of making a complicated diagnosis and increases the confi- dence of medical "first responders," showing them that they can do what is necessary to aid a seriously ill or injured shipmate. Internationally known ESP has worked in cooperation with MSI, offering marine oriented safety pro- grams in conjunction with MSI's highly acclaimed ship operations and safety programs. Mariotti to convert a second con- tainership to a cruise vessel. When the work is completed, the second vessel, Alexandra, will be a sistership to Costa Marina, which Mariotti also converted. Workers in the Genoa yard are scheduled to convert the second vessel to accom- modate 800 passengers in 400 cab- ins. The second ship will be 571.5 feet long with an 84-foot beam. Correction The article, "Colt-Pielstick Pow- ered 'Ericsson,' Navy's Newest Kaiser Class Oiler, Christened At Avondale Industries," which ap- peared on page 85 of the June 1990 issue, erroneously reported that the USNS John Ericsson (T-AO-194) was equipped with Lohmann & Stolterfoht reduction gears. The Er- icsson is actually equipped with Cincinnati Gear reduction gears. Cincinnati Gear reduction gearing will also be featured on the Navy oilers T-AO-195 and -196. Cincinna- ti Gear also supplied gearing for the first four oilers of the class, T-AO- 187, -188, -189 and -190. The gearbox designed and manu- factured by Cincinnati Gear fea- tures high power density carburized, hardened and precision ground gears reulting in a gearbox that is 35 to 40 percent smaller and lighter than a conventional through har- dened type.
