ELECTRONICS UPDATE MarineSafety Demonstrates Prince William Sound Simulation In the aftermath of the grounding of the Exxon Valdez and the ensu- ing oil spill in Prince William Sound, there has been considerable interest in resources available for pilot and deck officer training in such environmentally sensitive ar- eas. In response to requests from TV and other news media, a cora- puter-generated visual simulation of a large tanker in the waters of Prince William Sound was demon- strated at the MarineSafety Inter- national (MSI) Computer-Aided Operations Research Facility (CAORF), U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, Kings Point, N.Y. Viewers stood on the realistically replicated bridge of a super tanker and peered out its windows to see snow-covered mountains and the ship's huge foredeck. The fully lad- en "vessel" was taken through the Valdez Narrows into the south- bound traffic lane. Past Rocky Point on the left, the "Captain" pointed out Busby Island. The vi- sual simulation was switched to nighttime and a white light atop the island could be seen flashing. Turn- ing to the radar, the captain pointed out Bligh Island and the less dis- tinct Reef Island next to it. In real life, Bligh Reef was where the Exxon Valdez had run aground. Realism is an important ingre- dient of maritime training and re- search. Under a privatization agree- ment with the U.S. Maritime Ad- ministration, MarineSafety Interna- tional operates the CAORF on the grounds of the U.S. Merchant Ma- rine Academy. The CAORF ship- handling simulator is used to sup- port maritime research and train- ing. Any body of water and ship type can be simulated and environ- cated at Kings Point, N.Y. MSI offers colli- sion avoidance and piloting training courses for shipping companies operating in Prince William Sound and Valdez, Alaska. mental conditions can be controlled. In addition to engineering studies for harbor and waterway improve- ments, MSI conducts training courses for shipping companies and harbor pilots. A five-day course cov- ering collision avoidance and PWS- Valdez piloting is offered by MSI. MarineSafety, a wholly owned subsidiary of FlightSafety Interna- tional, also provides shiphandling training for the U.S. Navy at its Newport, R.I., facility. Soft and receiver changes provide even higher posi- tion-fixing accuracies and display stability, especially in fringe recep- tion areas; physical changes include an improved keyboard layout for more convenient and reliable opera- tion. With the LC-90 MARK-II, a sin- gle keystroke will save or recall up to 20 current event positions in both Lat/Lon and TDs, with data auto- matically entered into memory in numbered sequence. Otherwise, the LC-90 MARK-II retains all the per- formance and quality features of its predecessor. The large, five-line LCD shows all system data, with the top two lines providing user's choice of Lat/Lon or TD data and the remaining three lines showing a choice of computed navigational in- formation. Additional lines give a constant readout of alarm and sta- tus functions. Once local latitude and longitude are entered, operation is completely "hands-off." The LC-90 MARK-II automatically selects optimum mas- ter and secondaries, compensates for ASF and local magnetic varia- tion and sets the internal notch fil- ters to eliminate interference.
