"All of our new ships introduced in recent years have gone into sev- en-day service. Cabins aboard the Fantasy and her sisters will be among the largest afloat among the cruise industry's new generation of mega-ton ships, according to CCL. "There has been concern ex- pressed among agents that with some of the new large capacity cruise ships, cabins seem to be get- ting smaller in order to accommo- date more passengers," said Mr. Dickinson. "At Carnival, however, we are continuing our policy of pro- viding the largest, most spacious cabins available in the contempo- rary segment of the industry. Our cabins are typically 40-50 percent larger than those of other new ships which have entered the Miami market." The Fantasy is scheduled to be delivered in October 1989. Another key factor stressed by Fincantieri was the availability of large thyristor converters to oper- ate large synchronous propulsion motors at variable speeds as re- quired to drive fixed-pitch propel- lers and improve the maneuverabili- ty of the ship by faster response of the electric propulsion motors. The four-engine configuration gives sufficient flexibility in match- ing the generating capacity with the actual load under all operating con- ditions with acceptable load factors. To save weight and headroom, the engines are directly mounted on the ship's structure by resilient rubber elements.
