The Comfort, converted from a 90,000-dwt tanker, will be used to provide full medical support to the Defense Department's Rapid De- ployment Joint Task Force. She will be part of the MSC's Strategic Sea- lift Force. The 894-foot ship has a 1,000-bed, 12-operating room medical treat- ment facility. The first hospital ship, the USNS Mercy (T-AH-19), was delivered by NASSCO in December 1986. The tanker is scheduled to be built in Japan and put into service by the end of 1988. It will be used primarily to carry export-cargoes of Australian crude, and will be oper- ated by BHP Transport, another BHP subsidiary, and will be char- tered by BHP Petroleum.
