New York Port Engineers Discuss Computerizing Diesel Fuel Quality The first meeting of the 86-87 season by The Society of Marine Port Engineers New York heard a paper entitled "Computerizing Fuel Quality for Diesel Engines," pre- pared by William L. McCarthy, Gregory J. Shumski, and Mat- thew F. Winkler, all of Seaworthy Systems, Inc. of Essex, Conn. The paper was based on a study that Seaworthy made in cooperation with several shipowners and under the auspices of the Maritime Ad- ministration. Vessel operators have traditional- ly purchased bunker fuels based upon price alone. Those who have considered fuel quality have gener- ally concerned themselves with vis- cosity or density only. Seaworthy Systems, with the cooperation of Exxon USA, Interlake Steamship, Titan Navigation, Hvide Shipping, and Stolt-Nielsen has developed a versatile tool designed to aid pur- chasing personnel in the evaluation and selection of fuel oils for marine diesel power plants. This software system is intended for use as a shoreside management tool that could potentially save more than $200,000 per ship-year in fuel pur- chasing costs, and even more in pre- mature maintenance cost avoid- ance. By using the system, purchasing personnel are able to evaluate the best fuel choice among available bunkers from the standpoint of both cost per unit energy and compatibil- ity with the given vessel's engine and fuel system. Operating person- nel are made aware of potential operational and maintenance im- pacts, should a purchased fuel not meet its quoted specifications. The system is also capable of selecting the best value fuel for all diesel engines and fuel treatment system configurations presently found aboard U.S.-flag oceangoing mer- chant ships. $6-Million Navy Contract To Science Applications For Radiac Meter Parts Science Applications Internation- al Corporation, San Diego, Calif., is being awarded a $6,057,400 provi- sioned items order to provide 1,433 electronic spare parts for radiac me- ters used on ships. Work will be per- formed in San Diego, and is ex- pected to be completed in October 1987. The Navy Ships Parts Control Center, Mechanicsburg, Pa., is the contracting activity (N00039-85-C- 0219). VESSEL TRAFFIC MONITORING PRECISION RADAR NAVIGATION PORT MANAGEMENT RADAR DIGITAL SYSTEMS (RDS) is a systems integration and management consulting company in the field of RADAR DATA REMOTING and RADAR DISPLAY PROCESSING, ELECTRONIC CHART DISPLAYS and MICROCOMPUTERS FOR DATA BASE AND NAVIGATION MANAGEMENT. Using these disciplines three (3) low cost systems using the latest technology and fully-developed equipment are now available to solve a range of maritime navigation and traffic management requirements: A VESSEL TRAFFIC MONITORING SYSTEM (VTM) consisting of a low cost land-based marine radar remoted on telephone lines to an electronic chart display integrated with a radar color video display. All vessel movements are detected and plotted in real-time on a display containing the precise chart of the area. A PORT MANAGEMENT SYSTEM (PMS) consisting of the VTM system above plus a microcomputer for resource data base management. This system provides the user with a picture of current port status, all vessel locations, projections of current and future revenues and an allocation plan of all port resources in real-time on a color TV chart display. A PRECISION RADAR NAVIGATION SYSTEM designed for hydrographic survey, dredging operations, waterway navigation, vessel positioning and offshore rigs. It integrates a high accuracy, short range marine radar with a digital raster color display and a navigation computer to provide autonomous, precise navigation with accuracies to 1-2 meters.
