Teleflex RMVAs Eliminate Corrosion, Misalignment And Binding Problems Teleflex Inc.'s Remote Actuation Systems Group has simplified re- mote valve actuation with the devel- opment of the Remote Mechanical Valve Actuator (RMVA). The sys- tem was designed to eliminate the corrosion, misalignment, and bind- ing problems so often associated with reach rod and flexible shafting methods. The RMVA operates using a ten- sion-tension, closed-loop actuating system and can replace most exist- ing manual remote valve actuators, as well as hydraulic and pneumatic systems. A helical cable, manufac- tured by Teleflex for the aerospace and marine industries for more than 40 years, is the heart of the patented system. The helical cable meshes with ca- ble gears located in the actuator housings that are at each end of the system. Each cable gear has a worm gear with a pitch matching the pitch of the helical wrap of the cable; this allows the meshing of the cable and the gear. The rotary motion from the remote operator is then trans- mitted through the input shaft to the cable gear in the operator sta- tion actuator housing. When this occurs, the cable gear/helical cable interface converts the rotary motion to a linear movement of the cable. The cable moves linearly in a con- duit through the system driving the cable gear in the valve station actua- tor housing where the motion is con- verted back to a rotary output via an identical cable gear/helical cable in- terface. The rotary motion is trans- mitted through the output shaft to the valve coupling. The helical cable is protected from the environment by a conduit that is both flexible and durable. All Teleflex compo- nents have been manufactured using materials that offer superior corrosion resistance. The system is available with either handwheel-driven remote operators or deck boxes. Rising- stem, nonrising-stem, and rising- handwheel valve couplings can be supplied with or without quick-dis- connects. Custom-designed valve couplings are also available to meet specific application requirements. The RMVA system is designed to provide improved reliability, yield significant cost savings, and elimi- nate the need for regular mainte- nance. The flexibility of the conduit simplifies the routing of the system, as no gear boxes or universal joints are required to change directions. In use on U.S. Navy vessels for more than two years, the RMVA system is proving itself more reli- able and cost-effective than current methods of remote valve actuation. It has been approved for use on all U.S. Navy surface vessels and is cer- tified by the American Bureau of Shipping. The con- tract provides for video inspections, hull cleaning, propeller polishing, and hull repair work on the Coast Guard's cutters, buoy tenders, and patrol boats within the district.
