after the shaft generator has been connected. By adopting a suitable simulating calculation method, an optimal in- ter-related behavior of all drive train components is studied, includ- ing the propeller, main propulsion engine, gear unit, shaft-driven gen- erator, and the mains supply includ- ing diesel-driven generators operat- ing in parallel. The high efficiency of the gear unit is one of the essential factors for the economy of the plant. The RCF system operates with an effi- ciency ranging between 93 and 97 percent. The system, which requires a relatively low capital investment, is also advantageous to use because of the potential fuel cost savings. Renk has sold approximately 30 RCF systems to be powered by M.A.N.-B&W two-stroke engines. This is a joint development of Renk and M.A.N.-B&W. Four 1,100-kw electrically controlled units are now in service on refrigerated container- ships with fixed-pitch propellers built at the German shipyard Brem- er Vulkan. Two 700-kw hydraulical- ly controlled systems are for 79,900- dwt tankers built at the Uljanik shipyard in Yugoslavia, and one 900-kw unit is on order for Burmeis- ter & Wain, Copenhagen. The German company's U.S. sub- sidiary is Renk Corporation of Dun- can, S.C. A complete full color 26-page bro- chure fully describing in detail the Renk organization and its equip- ments and services on a worldwide basis is available free of charge. That's why Romor brand bearing staves from BFGoodrich were first to be qualified by the U.S. Navy to Mil-B-17901B Class III specifications. A thin, soft, and very smooth rubber-surfaced lining backed by tough, non-corroding ultra high molecular weight poly- ethylene (UHMWP) reduces friction and allows Romor staves to outperform Class I hard-rubber, brass-backed staves. Romor staves are quieter, lighter, less expensive, more readily available and more energy-efficient than metal-backed staves. Which explains why they are used on more than 100 U.S. Naval and Coast Guard vessels, as well as by the navies — of many other nations. f ^^^ \ So, for new or retrofit marine applications, follow \ ^PPJ a naval tradition.
