Joint Venture Receives Title XI For $109-Million Chemical Carrier The Maritime Administration has approved in principle an appli- cation for a Title XI guarantee to aid in financing the construction of the Chemical Pioneer, a 35,000- deadweight-ton chemical carrier being built by Newport News Shipbuilding and Drydock Co., Newport News, Va. The approved guarantee will not exceed $82,264,000 or 75 percent of the vessel's estimated actual cost of $109,686,024. Union Carbide Corp. (UCC) of Danbury, Conn., and Marine Transport Lines, Inc. (MTL) of New York, N.Y., filed the applica- tion on behalf of Union Marine Transport Co., a joint venture partnership to be formed by UCC and MTL subsidiaries. Scheduled to be delivered in September, the Chemical Pioneer will be the first chemical carrier built in the United States since 1970. The vessel was designed to meet the requirements of various UCC business departments for parcel liftings of varied nature and size. Bankers Trust Company, New York, N.Y., is expected to serve as owner trustee of the vessel under a leveraged lease financing ar- rangement. Union Marine Trans- port Co. would then enter into a long-term bareboat charter of the vessel, which will be operated by Marine Transport Management, a wholly owned MTL subsidiary. The Chemical Pioneer is ex- pected to be used primarily for the carriage of UCC cargoes between plants and terminals on the Gulf of Mexico, East Coast, and in Puerto Rico. Zenisek Named VP Of Manufacturing Operations At COMSAT TeleSystems COMSAT TeleSystems, Inc., Fairfax, Va., named Robert F. Zenisek as the company's new vice president of manufacturing operations. In this position, Mr. Zenisek will be responsible for all phases of the manufacture of TeleSystems' telecommunications products. Mr. Zenisek comes to Tele- Systems with more than 20 years of experience in the field of tele- communications equipment man- ufacturing. Most recently he was vice president-operations for GTE Lenkurt in San Carlos, Calif. He holds a BS in management and a BSEE from the University of Illinois. Sulzer Engines For Two Container Ships Sulzer 6RTA76 low-speed diesel engines will power two 1210TCU container ships being built for Lloyd Brasileiro. Each engine has a continuous rating of 16,500 bhp at 90 rpm giving the 590-foot, 24,400-ton ships a service speed of 18.25 knots with a daily fuel con- sumption of 44 tons. The engines are being built under license by Ishibras in Brazil and IHI in Japan. $1.2-Million Contract Award To Debeg Debeg Private Limited has re- cently signed a contract with a major shipyard in the Peoples Re- public of China. Worth S$1.25 million, the con- tract covers the supply of Radio Communications and Navigation equipment for three 12,300-dwt container vessels being built for Chinese owners and includes an option for three further vessels. Installation supervision and commissioning will be carried out by technicians from DPL's Singa- pore facility. DPL is a member of the West German DEBEG groups of companies. Shape fabrication line.
