Young American The President Lincoln. This is the largest container- ship ever built in the U.S., and the first to be diesel pro- pelled. American President Lines' brand new superves- sel can carry an unprecedented 1,250 forty-foot containers—enough cargo to fill a 12-mile freight train. A trio of 2,500 kW Transamerica Delaval Enterprise diesel generators helps meet the ship's big electrical de- mands. Burning cost efficient, low grade fuel, they pro- duce enough reliable power to safeguard the more than 7,000 tons of produce and meat that this vessel can accommodate in 400 refrigerated containers. The Enterprise generating diesels used on the Presi- dent Lincoln, and two sister ships to follow, are from Transamerica Delaval's line of heavy-duty main and auxiliary engines ranging from 3.000 to 13,800 horse- power.
