(FELS) has signed a contract to construct a semisub- mersible drilling platform for June 1, 1981 11 Western Company of the U.S. Scheduled for delivery in mid- 1983, the self-propelled drilling vessel will have dimensions of 260 feet by 200 feet by 116 feet and a twin ship-shaped hull sup- porting six caissons and a rec- tangular elevated deck. The deck will have single-level machinery houses, two-level quar- ters with helideck, and a sub- structure with derrick. The quar- ters will have facilities to accom- modate 92 offshore personnel, and will be provided with both cooling and heating systems. Three re- volving cranes will be installed, and the vessel will be moored by four double-chain windlasses with eight anchors. The vessel will be fabricated to meet all regulatory requirements of the American Bureau of Ship- ping and the U.S. Coast Guard, and is designed to operate in wa- ter depths from 150 feet to 1,500 feet. It will be built to take a maximum deck load of 4,000 long tons with capability of surviving storm conditions at a draft of 50 feet under 100 knots steady wind, 1.5 knots current, and 100 feet maximum wave height. At present, Western Oceanics, Inc., a subsidiary of Western Company, is having two of their jackups built in FELS. The jack- ups, which form part of the six Friede and Goldman L-780 design jackups currently under construc- tion in FELS, will be among the first jackups of this design to be operational in the world. They will be christened Apollo I and Apollo II.
