SAME's Philadelphia Post Elects Officers — Pistilli Named President Newly elected officers of the Philadelphia Post, Society of American Military Engi- neers, are (L to R): reelected treasurer Edwin A. Kucerik, project engineer for the Army Corps of Engineers; newly elected president Dr. August D. Pistilli, president of American Dredging Company; recently elected vice president Capt. Robert J. McHugh Jr., USN; and reelected secretary Stanley J. Snarski, assistant chief of the Operations Division for the Army Corps of Engineers. The Society of American Mili- tary Engineers (SAME), a pro- fessional engineering society which was founded in 1920 and is comprised of active duty mil- itary and civilian engineers who are dedicated to the defense of our country, has officially in- stalled its new local officers for 1981. Elected president of the soci- ety's Philadelphia post which comprises the Delaware Valley area, is Dr. August D. Pistilli, P.E., who is president of the American Dredging Company; vice president is Capt. Robert J. McHugh Jr., CEC, USN, Com- manding Officer, Northern Divi- sion-Naval Facilities Command; reelected secretary is Stanley J. Snarski, Assistant Chief of Op- erations Division-Army Corps of Engineers; and reelected as treasurer is Edwin A. Kucerik, project engineer-Army Corps of Engineers. Mr. Kucerik also re- ceived an award for Outstanding Service. Dr. Pistilli is replacing Col. James G. Ton, CE, U.S. Army, the past president. According to a SAME official, Colonel Ton has had a very distinguished and suc- cessful year as leader of a society which attempts to further the idea of the citizen/soldier; a con- cept which goes back to the time of George Washington. The new president, Dr. Pistilli, holds the title of "Engineer of the Year" for 1980; an award from the American Society of Civil Engineers. As a Navy pilot in World War II, he was shot down three times. He also served on active duty during the Korean War and as a special consultant to the Defense Department in Vietnam during the TET offen- sive. Attending the meeting was Comdr. Steven C. Beuby, CEC, USN. He is the Indian Ocean Project Officer, Naval Facilities Engineering Command. He com- mented on the construction ac- tivity for the Indian Ocean Island of Diego Garcia, and he pointed out the strategic role played by this land in support of the United States efforts for the whole Mid- dle East.
