SNAME New England Section Hears Two Technical Papers The New England Section of The Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers met in Newton, Mass. on September 29, to hear the presentation of two excellent tech- nical papers. Left to right, Lyssimachos Vassilopoulos, Section chairman, is shown with authors W.H. Hanot and J.G. Arrison. Following cocktails and dinner, the tech- nical meeting was opened by the chairman of the Section, Lyssimachos Vassilopoulos, who introduced the first author, W.H. Hanot, a Massachusetts Institute of Technology stu- dent in the Department of Ocean Engineer- ing. His paper was entitled "Development of an Electro-Acoustic Transducer for Sono- buoy Applications." The paper describes the development of a piezoelectric-based trans- ducer for use as a directionally sensitive ele- ment in a sonobuoy. It is destined to replace the presently used electrodynamic trans- ducer. The new device features high sensi- tivity, directionality, wide bandwidth, and simple rigid construction. The second paper entitled "Hydrodynamic Interaction Between the Rudder and Hull of a Sailing Vessel" was presented by the author, J.G. Arrison, a recent student at M.I.T. The paper describes the results of water tunnel experiments which investigated the forces on a rudder as a function of vari- ations in hull-rudder combinations, and fixed fairings. Ways to increase boat turning mo- ment with less drag and increased stability were suggested. These included antiventila- tion plates and movable skegs. Copies of past and present Section papers may be purchased for $4, including postage, from the editor by writing Lt. Donald C. Gerber, Department of Applied Science and Engineering, U.S. Coast Guard Academy, New London, Conn. 06320. This announcement appears as a matter of record only.
