Known as "Res-N-Glas," this glass-filled polyester resin self-laminates to form a tough, smooth coating which never changes its surface profile. This ship bottom smooth- ness is significant in terms of dramatic fuel economies which are of paramount impor- tance to tankers and cargo carriers. The brochure also details technical infor- mation on application, chemical resistance and gives successful case histories over the 12-year period since "Res-N-Glas" was in- troduced. Det Norske Veritas7 Rules New 1977 Edition Available Det norske Veritas' 1977 edition of "Rules for the Construction and Classification of Steel Ships" is now available. A number of major and minor amendments and additions have been made to the Rules since the 1976 edition. The rules for additional fire protection for cargo ships, the F-class Rules, have been completely revised on the basis of practical experience and the latest principles for fire protection and extinction. Systematic anal- yses to minimize the risk of fire are to be carried out for arrangements and systems in engine and boiler rooms. The F-class was already introduced in 1955, and until now 430 ships totaling about 12 million gross tons have been built to this additional class notation. The rules for instrumentation and auto- mation and the rules for the additional class notation EO for periodically unmanned ma- chinery plants have been amended on the basis of service experience and recent tech- nology development. The rules for ships for alternate carriage of oil carge and dry cargo, the so-called combination carriers, have been revised. Additional requirements are stipulated for arrangements and systems as well as oper- ational procedures necessary for obtaining a gas-free condition when the ship is con- verted from oil cargo service to dry cargo service. A new additional class notation, Tanker for Oil/Dry Cargo Alternate, has been introduced for these ships. FROM MISSISSIPPI MARINE—Mississippi Marine Towboat Corporation, Greenville, Miss., recently delivered a deck barge to the Army Corps of Engineers. The 55-foot by 16-foot by 3-foot barge was built to ABS specifications with welding done by ABS certified personnel. A multi-coat system of organic-zinc and epoxy was used to meet military specifications on painting. The barge will be used in the St. Louis, Mo., district for lock and dam maintenance service. The barge was built in Mississippi Marine's shipyard on Lake Ferguson. In addition to new con- struction, Mississippi Marine also repairs tow- boats and barges for inland and offshore use.
