Mechling President —Dudley Coles Executive VP Dudley Coles Union Mechling Corporation, a subsidiary of 'Dravo Corporation and one of the largest carriers on the inland waterway system, has announced the election of F.A. Mechling as president. Dudley Coles was elected to suc- ceed Mr. Mechling as executive vice president. The two men will take over their new posts on January 1, 1974, upon the retirement of Charles E. Walker as president. Mr. Walker will have served 41 years with Dravo, Union Mechling and a predecessor company, Union Barge Line Corporation. Before formation of Union Mechling last June through a merger of Union Barge Line and A.L. Mechling Barge Lines Inc., Mr. Mechling served as executive vice president and treasurer of Mechling Barge Lines. Mr. Coles joined Dravo in 1946 and trans- ferred to its subsidiary, Union Barge Line, in 1962. He served 10 years as vice president- sales and, upon formation of Union Mech- ling Corporation, was elected vice president- marketing. A native of Rock Falls, 111, Mr. Mechling is a past chairman of the board of The Ameri- can Waterways Operators, a member of the advisory committee and a past chairman of the board of Water Resources Congress, a member of the water carrier panel and board of the Transportation Association of Amer- ica, a member of the executive committee of the National Waterways Conference and the advisory committee of the Northwestern Uni- versity Transportation Center, and chairman of the board of The National River Academy. Born in Chestnut Hill, Pa., Mr. Coles is a graduate of Lehigh University. He is a member of the Traffic Club of Pittsburgh, The Propeller Club of the United States, the Traf- fic and Transportation Association of Pitts- burgh, and the National Defense Transpor- tation Association. Hampton Roads Section Hears Paper By Richard Vassallo On Marine Air-Conditioning The Hampton Roads Section of The Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers held their first local meeting of the 1973-74 season at the Little Creek Amphib Base Offi- cers Club on October 18, 1973. Chairman C.E. Peacock Jr. opened the meet- ing with the introduction of the new Section officers, and following dinner presented Rich- ard C. Vassallo, the principal speaker of the evening. Mr. Vassallo, who is chief engineer for Bail- ey Refrigeration, outlined the current trends in the field of marine air-conditioning systems and dealt with the basic refrigeration cycle. His paper emphasized the chilled water pip- ing system, its use and advantages. Mr. Vas- sallo also predicted a very bright future for the screw compressor within the marine air- conditioning field.
