Sometimes McAllister is New York's MetropolitSn Transporta- tion Authority asked. They wanted us to help sink a piece of their new subway tunnel into the East River. So we did. Using five tugs, we towed the pre- fabricated 16,000-ton steel tube a mile and a half along an 80-foot nar- row channel dredged for it in the river's East Channel. And, using a laser beam, precisely aligned the section beneath a waiting gantry anchored on barges midstream. The subway contractor then sank the double-deck tube into the river bed. Right where sandhogs could link it to tunnel sections previously hewn through Welfare Island's bedrock. Maneuvering 378 feet of steel tun- nel in a tide-churned channel a mere 80 feet wide takes power and precise control. Just what our exclusive Kort- nozzle-equipped supertugs bring to every job. Put them to your harbor tests. We promise not to sink anything. Unless you ask us to. MCALLISTER 17 Battery Place, N.Y. 10004. Telephone (212) 269-3200.
