ABS Survey Shows APL Ships Free Of Engine Room Problems The S/S President Cleveland, of the American President Lines, recently completed another of its required American Bureau of Shipping surveys after a five-year period completely free of any engine room problems. On hand to witness the opening of the Presi- dent Cleveland's two marine steam turbines dur- ing the survey was Hughes W. Ogilvie, mana- ger of marketing for the turbines' builder, General Electric's Marine Turbine and Gear Department. Also present was the ship's chief engineer, Fred Jennings, who has served in that capacity since the ship went into service. Both men also attended the christening of the ship. Viewing opened turbine, from left, are Hughes W. Ogil- vie, for GE's Marine Turbine and Gear Department, Lynn, Mass., Fred Jennings, the Cleveland's chief engineer, and Ben Hicks, electrical port engineer, American President Lines. Commenting on the trouble-free operation of the two 10,000-shp twin main steam tur- bines, Mr. Ogilvie said the President Cleve- land's engines "have never broken down and forced the company to alter schedules since the Cleveland was delivered from the old Bethlehem shipyard in Alameda, Calif., in the late 1940s." He pointed out that the same was true of the S/S President Wilson, sister ship of the Cleveland. Mr. Ogilvie said that GE's Marine Turbine and Gear Department has built over 61-million horsepower of marine propulsion equipment— from 1,200 displacement ton destroyers to 320,000-dwt tankers. In its $75-million facili- ties in Lynn, Mass., it has some 2,000 em- ployees in operations covering more than 70 acres and has a capacity of 75 marine steam propulsion units a year. You'd expect no less from the inventors of the 5 cent vibration meter. NASHVILLE BRIDGE COMPANY P. 0. BOX 239, NASHVILLE, TENN. 37202 A Division of The American Ship Building Co.
