Howard R. Kornberg Named Port Engineer Port Of Galveston Howard R. Kornberg Howard R. Kornberg has been named Port Engineer for the Port of Galveston. C.S. Devoy, Port Di- rector, made the announcement fol- lowing a meeting of the board of trustees, Galveston Wharves . Born in St. Louis, Mo., Mr. Kornberg received a bachelor of science degree in civil engineering from North Dakota State Univer- sity in 1940 and is a registered pro- fessional engineer. He has spent considerable time overseas in his career, and for the past three years was a consulting engineer in Cape Town, South Africa. He has also worked in Indonesia, Greenland and Australia. Mr. Kornberg's experience also includes the positions of chief field engineer on an atomic plant at Oak Ridge, Tenn., and sales engineer with the U.S. Steel Export Com- pany in New York City. I. de Graff Publishes "Ship Model Testing" By D. Phillips-Birt A new book, describing the use of models for research into basic questions of ship design and con- struction, is being published by John de Graff, Inc., 34 Oak Avenue, Tuckahoe, N.Y. 10707. The book is titled, "Ship Model Testing," and is written by Douglas Phillips- Birt, a naval architect. This publi- cation sells for $8.95 a copy. The use of models for research into basic questions of ship design and construction is a growing field in view of the new importance at- tached to speed, seaworthiness and maneuverability. This book gives a general review of the hydrody- namic principles and experimental techniques involved in the various types of model tests used. Written for both student and practising naval architects and ship designers, this book will interest all those in any way responsible for ships and their design. Douglas Phillips-Birt is a naval architect with wide experience. After serving his student appren- ticeship with John I. Thornycroft, Southampton, England, he was naval architect with the same yard for several years. He then worked as a yacht architect with Camper and Nicholsons until 1955. Since that time he has worked as a con- sulting naval architect. Mr. Phillips- Birt is the author of a number of well-established books on ship and boat design. 44 Bollinger To Build Work-Over Drilling Barge For Well Service Bollinger Machine Shop & Ship- yard, Inc., Lockport, La. 70374, has been awarded a contract to con- struct a work-over drilling barge for John W. Smith Well Service, Inc. This structure will be the first of its kind to be constructed on the banks of Bayou Lafourche in Lou- isiana. The barge structure is 173 feet by 39 feet by nine feet ten inches and will have a housing structure built on with complete living quar- ters. The barge, when completed, will be self-contained, having every- thing on board for complete drilling and work-over operations. The ."crew's quarters will have facilities to sleep 22 men, including needed service personnel. All quar- ters will be air-conditioned with each man having gear and personal lockers for proper storage. In ad- dition, a large cafeteria and lounge will be provided for added comfort during nonworking hours. The barge will be equipped with all heavy duty drilling equipment, large drilling mud tanks, and drill- ing and potable water.
