T his month’s edition of MTR is a bit divergent from our normal path as we present the MTR100: information on 100 leading companies that serve the undersea technology market, whether on the scientific, commercial or defense front. This project — the first in our magazine’s history — was challenging, first and foremost because, unlike other such sur- veys, there was no common threads (financial results, for exam- ple) that could be used as a universal measuring stick. Many of the innovative companies serving this market, for example, are privately owned and unwilling to share financial details. So it came down to some good old-fashioned reporting, which included observing, col- lecting information, consulting with trusted sources, and ultimately selecting a diverse group that we believed to be a fair representation. Surely there will be companies not list- ed that perhaps deserved so, but the number one criteria for inclusion was that each company had to complete and return an application form. Hundreds of companies heed- ed he call, and we laboriously whittled the field down to the selection, which begins on page 13. As always, I look forward to your comments and suggestions. And for those of you interested, we’ve already started to distribute the survey packets for the 2007 edition.
