Navy Port Engineers act as the ownerÕs representative and serve as the sub- ject matter expert on shipÕs systems/ equipment and are intimately familiar with the operational and maintenance requirements of their assigned ships to ensure their mission readiness. They are active participants on a Main- tenance Team responsible for one or two ships and serve as the Command-ing OfÞ cerÕs primary representative for all off ship maintenance and modern- ization. As their assigned shipÕs life cycle manager, the Port Engineer is expected to be the most knowledge-able person on the material condition of their ships and are responsible for ensuring their ships safely meet their expected service life. Port Engineers engage with senior Navy leadership, government program ofÞ ces, sailors in the ß eet, and shipyard contractors so effective communication and inter- personal skills are essential. Travel is minimal and all shipyard avail- abilities are conducted in the home port. All Port Engineers are encour- aged to visit their ships during deploy-ment in order to plan work packages and to get underway with them as their schedule permits. Candidates must have the following qualiÞ cations: possess and maintain SECRET government clearance, bach-elorÕs degree in Engineering, minimum USCG Third Assistant Engineer Li- cense, and at least 5 years of sailing experience in the merchant marine or Navy. Prior Port Engineer experience, involvement with ship repair industry, and knowledge of the NavyÕs current maintenance practices is desirable. Candidates must be physically able to enter conÞ ned space (i.e. tanks and voids), climb ladders, and masts aboard their assigned ships while in port or at sea in order to validate main- tenance requirements.
