Tom Crowley, Jr. is Chairman and CEO of Crowley Maritime Corporation. “I started officially with a paying job when I was 16, taking tickets for the passenger boats we had in San Francisco Bay,” he said, referring to the Red and White Fleet that was sold off in the late 90s. “I went to University of Washington in Seattle and worked for the company in summers. When I graduated I went to Jacksonville, Fla. and worked in the management training program, then came back to San Francisco to run the Red and White Fleet as the general manager. From there I took over local tug operations. Then my father passed away in 1994 and that’s when I took over as Chairman and CEO.” Even before that, Tom Crowley, Jr. had an inside view of his father’s business. “My dad was older. He was 53 when I was born. The company was a really big part of his life. He wasn’t much into sports or throwing the ball on Saturday afternoon, so he would take me down to the shipyard and we would go drive a tug boat around or pick through the scrap heap to see what we could make some- thing,” he said. “I always enjoyed it.
