<BODY> <div> emotional Marine irriers Awarded &RAD Contract International Marine Carriers, c. (IMC), a world leader in ship magement and marine transpor- tion services, has been awarded a ntract by the Maritime Adminis- ation (MarAd) - the latest in a ries of major assignments given the firm. The new contract calls for IMC's services to MarAd for three Ro/Ro vessels which will become part of the Ready Reserve Fleet. This six-phase program prompted an ex- pansion of its staff to include addi- tional marine technical and admin- istrative members. Phase I of the MarAd contract, which is already underway, has IMC surveying the vessels in order to verify all modifications and upgrades necessary for registering the vessels in the U.S. During Phase II of the contract, IMC will be accepting de- livery of all vessels on behalf of MarAd at U.S. ports. Phase III will consist of specification preparation for the vessel's reflagging, equip- ment renewal or modification, drydocking and general repairs, ac- tivation and sea trials, and deacti- vation for placement into the Ready Reserve Fleet. Phase IV will involve the awarding of a contract to a ship- yard to accomplish the tasks set forth in Phase III. In Phase V, IMC will manage and supervise all reflagging and repairs being per- formed in the shipyard. In the final phase, IMC will assume manage- ment of the day-to-day operations of the vessels while in the Ready Re- serve Fleet. The three vessels were built in 1977 at Kawasaki Heavy Industries (Japan) and are 648 feet long with a beam of 105 feet and a gross tonnage of 14,483. Incorporating twin me- dium speed Kawasaki/MAN diesel engines with a maximum horse- power of 28,000, their normal de- sign service speed is 18 knots.
